We recently ventured out to Williamsburg to try this fairly new hip and modern Mediterranean restaurant called Zizi Limona in Brooklyn. The menu offers a spectrum of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Starting with the appetizer of the “Small Zi’s” section, we ordered the Crazy Baba which was absolutely delicious. The aesthetics of it was unexpected from the ingredients listed on the menu. It is a green spread and had texture like hummus but smoother. The crazy baba consists of charred eggplant, feta and basil with grilled pita bread. The moment we dipped the warm pita into the baba and took a bite, we were mind blown.
This Ribs de Berber from the “Big Zi’s” feautes a 5 hour braised short rib, risotto-style freekeh, with assorted wild mushrooms. The meat was perfectly cooked and so tender that it literally fell off the bone and melted in the mouth as I took a bite.
We also ordered the Cowshuka, a”Classic Zi’s”, which is grilled skirt steak, poached eggs, ‘matbucha’ sauce , sautéed spinach, chickpeas, and harissa. It was definitely very different from the foods that I’ve been exposed to. It’s full of different flavors with steak cooked to medium rare. I thought of it as steak on stew. Needless to say, we had a great time at Zizi Limona!
